The Longest Tunnels in the World
The record depends on what counts as a tunnel. The Delaware Aqueduct, a water tunnel feeding New York City, runs 137 km through rock and holds the overall record.
Among rail tunnels the Gotthard Base Tunnel leads at 57.1 km, followed by the Seikan Tunnel in Japan and the Channel Tunnel. For road traffic the Laerdal Tunnel in Norway is longest at 24.5 km.
Immersed tunnels under the sea are shorter still but hold depth records instead..
