Tunnel Fires and the Safety Revolution
The 1999 Mont Blanc fire that killed 39 people, the Tauern fire the same year and the 2001 Gotthard road fire rewrote the rulebook.
Modern long tunnels now have parallel escape tubes, cross passages every few hundred meters, smoke extraction that can reverse airflow, fire refuges, radio rebroadcasts and spacing rules for heavy trucks.
The result is a steady fall in fire deaths even as traffic grows..
