Links Honshu and Hokkaido beneath the Tsugaru Strait, with 23.3 km under the seabed and 240 m of rock cover at its deepest. Planned after a 1954 typhoon sank a ferry and killed 1,430 people, it took 24 years to build and carried its first Shinkansen trains in 2016. Longest undersea tunnel in the world.
