The first tunnel known to have been built successfully beneath a navigable river, dug between Rotherhithe and Wapping by Marc Brunel and his son Isambard using a pioneering tunnelling shield. Floods and deaths stretched the work over 18 years. Opened to pedestrians in 1843, it has carried trains since 1869 and is now part of the London Overground.
