Overview
The longest railway tunnel in the world, twin bores driven 2,300 m beneath the Gotthard massif. Built over 17 years as the centerpiece of the Swiss NRLA AlpTransit program, it gave freight and passenger trains a nearly flat 250 km/h route through the Alps, cutting Zurich to Milan journeys by about an hour and shifting alpine freight from road to rail.
